最初にブルーノート（Blue Note Records）がレコード番号5000番台の１０インチレコードを発売していた時期におけるアルフレッド・ライオン（Alfred Lion）の傾向というか嗜好を。
ブルーノートを立ち上げた熱意そのままに、商業的な成功は二の次で、惚れ込んだミュージシャンを徹底的に録音し尽していた模様（笑）。
そんな熱血漢的傾向は、せっかちだったアルフレッド・ライオンらしいとも言えますね。
さて今回登場するハービー・ニコルズ（Herbie Nichols）は、セロニアス・モンク（Thelonious Monk）やアンドリュー・ヒル（Andrew Hill）同様、アルフレッド・ライオンが惚れ込んだ、圧倒的な存在感を誇る唯一無比の個性を持ったピアニストです。
ブルーノート（Blue Note Records）のオーナー、アルフレッド・ライオン（Alfred Lion）に愛され、後進のミュージシャン達が敬意を払う存在ではあるものの、その強烈すぎる個性が災いしてか、一般大衆からすれば「誰？それ？」的存在であり、商業的成功とは無縁のまま、現在に至ります・・・・。
という事で本題。
「The Prophetic Herbie Nichols Vol. 1 (Blue Note BLP-5068)」と、「The Prophetic Herbie Nichols Vol. 2 (Blue Note BLP-5069)」という１０インチレコード２枚に分散収録されたアルバムのご紹介です。
まず、ドラムスのアート・ブレイキー（Art Blakey）を投入している処で、アルフレッド・ライオンがハービー・ニコルズを「第二のセロニアス・モンク（Thelonious Monk）」として売り出そうという明確な意思が感じとれますね。
「The Prophetic Herbie Nichols Vol. 1 (Blue Note BLP-5068)」のジャケットイメージは、預言者の目かな。
大胆な線画で描かれた抽象画のようなアルバムジャケットや、アルバムタイトルの「預言者（Prophetic）」が暗示している様に、演奏はハードバップから脱線というか逸脱した処があったりします。
「The Prophetic Herbie Nichols Vol. 2 (Blue Note BLP-5069)」のモチーフは、アメーバか。
漫画家・諸星大二郎先生の描く「妖怪ハンター」シリーズに出て来そうな感じでもあります。
またアルバム収録曲として、一般人には摩訶不思議としか表現しようのない「Cro-Mangnon Nights」であったり・・・。
「Amoeba's Dance」という前衛的なタイトルの曲が、アート・ブレイキーの奔放なドラムが引き立つ形で演奏されていたりします。
最初は「摩訶不思議」だと思うものの、ハマると容易に抜け出せない魅力を持つのが、ハービー・ニコルズ（Herbie Nichols）というミュージシャンなんだと思います。

ブルーノートから発売された３枚組ＣＤには、「The Prophetic Herbie Nichols Vol. 1 (Blue Note BLP-5068)」と、「The Prophetic Herbie Nichols Vol. 2 (Blue Note BLP-5069)」収録曲の別テイクがさりげなく収録されております。
あと、日本で編纂された「Herbie Nichols Trio Vol. 2」の音源も入ってます。
なので普段「RVG盤」聴いてたのに、リーズナブルな中古出品された途端、思わず手が出てしまったというね・・・。
