マイルス・デイヴィス（Miles Davis）率いる、ジョン・コルトレーン（John Coltrane）を擁する50年代「第１期クインテット」が、1956年の05月11日と10月26日の２回に渡り、通称「マラソン・セッション」と呼ばれるスタジオ録音を行いました。
プレステッジ（Prestige Records）との契約を早期に終わらせるため、ライブ録音方式にて１テイクで次々と録音を行い、1956年05月に14曲、11月に12曲を録音。
計26曲中25曲が、都合４枚のアルバムに分散収録されました。

10月26日に録音された残り１曲「'Round Midnight」だけは、何故か別のアルバム「Prestige PRLP 7150 Miles Davis And The Modern Jazz Giants」に収録されております。
で、プレステッジ（Prestige Records）が最初に発売したのが、10月26日後半に録音
された曲だけで編纂した「Cookin' (Prestige PRLP 7094)」です。
このアルバムが今もベストセラーを記録する理由の一つが、マラソン・セッション一番最後に録音された「My Funny Valentine」。
以降ライブで再演され続ける、バラッドの初演が収録されているという事のようです。
続く「Blues by Five [false start]」で、生々しいスタジオでのやりとりをあえて収録したりと、マラソン・セッション当日のスタジオの雰囲気までを１枚のアルバムに詰め込んでおります。
「Tune Up」に続く「When Lights Are Low」へのメドレーは、マイルスの思いつきか？
マイルス１人がテーマを吹き出し、それを聴いたバックメンバーが演奏に加わっていきます。
このメドレーをアルバム最後に収録する事で、ライブ録音風１発撮りの緊張感が、聴いている我々にも伝わってきます。
