2008年に発売された３枚組ＣＤボックスセット「Complete 1958-1959 "Plus Four" Sessions (Jazz Connections)」は、2007年に逝去した「Maxwell Lemuel "Max" Roach (1924-2007)」と、ベースの「Art Davis (1934-2007)」への追悼盤という位置付けで発売されたようです。
３枚のＣＤにはジャケット記載の通り、６枚のアルバムと1958年のＴＶ番組向けのライブを収録。

私は、中々単独でＣＤ発売されない「Max Roach + 4 - At Newport (EmArcy MG-36140)」を聴くためだけに、このＣＤ入手しました（mp3ダウンロード販売はある模様）。
本当に凄いんだ・・・このライブ盤。
このアルバムが聴きたいと思ったきっかけは1995年に発売された２枚組ベスト盤「Clifford Brown And Max Roach – Alone Together: The Best Of The Mercury Years (Verve Records 526 373-2)」
このベスト盤にに収録された「Night In Tunisia」のライブバージョンを聴いて感動したためです。
どこかで読んだこのライブに対する識者の感想として「鬼神の如き演奏を繰り広げるブッカー・リトル」というのがあり、実際に聴いてみると確かにブッカー・リトルが鬼気迫る演奏を繰り広げております。
「KABC TV Stars of Jazz, Hollywood, October 5, 1958」は画質悪いですが、当時の映像が見れるようです。

このボックスセットに収録されたアルバムは以前、何枚か購入して聴いてはいたのですが・・・イマイチ、ピンと来なかったのが正直な感想でしたが・・・。
このボックスセットのリマスターが良いのか、以前聴いたＣＤとまったく別物のような気持ちで、短命だった天才トランぺッター、ブッカー・リトル（Booker Little）の演奏を楽しむ事が出来ます。
お財布に多少なりとも余裕がある方で、ブッカー・リトルの快演を聴いてみたい人には、この３枚組ＣＤボックスセット「Complete 1958-1959 "Plus Four" Sessions (Jazz Connections)」、心からお勧めしときます。
